Voters and supporters in Pakwach District are urging National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, to remain committed to the promises he made during his first campaign visit to the West Nile region. They say his pledges directly addressed long-standing challenges affecting communities in the area.
Kyagulanyi launched his vote-mobilization drive in West Nile for the 2026–2031 presidential race, where he faces seven other candidates, including incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is seeking a seventh term. During his tour of Pakwach District, Kyagulanyi held rallies in Panyimur Town Council, Dei Sub-county along the DR Congo border, and Pakwach Town Council. He pledged to tackle concerns related to the Fisheries Protection Unit on Uganda’s waters, resolve cross-Nile land conflicts, revive the railway system, promote national unity, create jobs for unemployed youth, and advocate for the release of political prisoners.
Pius Kumakech, a NUP supporter, says Kyagulanyi’s message renewed hope that residents will regain economic stability through improved agriculture in Palango, better fishing activities, and revived businesses. He urges the NUP leader to uphold human rights and fulfill the promises made to the Jonam community.
Oscar Ocaya, the NUP focal point person for Pakwach District, appeals for timely action on Kyagulanyi’s commitments should he win the presidency.
Another resident, Osacar Mungunalipa, asks Kyagulanyi to prioritize national unity across Uganda’s ethnic communities, noting it as a key expectation among supporters.
Awekunimungu Gwoktho, a female supporter, says Kyagulanyi addressed issues that matter to women. She says they will fully back him as long as he remains committed to his pledges.
According to NUP’s 2026–2031 manifesto, the fisheries sector contributes at least 12 percent of agricultural GDP and supports an estimated 3.2 million Ugandans. However, the party notes that the sub-sector is under threat due to overfishing, illegal fishing gear targeting immature species, and weak enforcement of fisheries laws.
On land rights, the manifesto outlines plans to review past and current land transactions and restore land to rightful owners through transparent and accountable processes. It also pledges to fast-track the establishment of a National Customary Land Registry to document and protect customary land holdings. The manifesto further promises to promote and subsidize Certificates of Customary Ownership to formalize family and community land rights and to strengthen public awareness campaigns on land rights and registration procedures.
