More than 40 families in Ngenge Sub County and Chepsukunya town council in Kween district are homeless following a heavy storm that destroyed their houses. The heavy rain that started on Monday evening characterized by strong winds hit hard Ngenge and Kapkwot parishes leaving several families stranded, while in Chepsukunya town council, it affected Kapkwich and Chepsukunya wards.

The storm blew off roof tops exposing the families to harsh weather conditions. Samuel Chemonges, one of the affected residents from Kapkwot parish in Ngenge Sub County says his hailstorm blew off the roof of his two houses and is now stranded. According to Chemonges after the disaster, they took refuge in the neighborhood. He has asked the authorities to come to the rescue for the situation is unbearable for the rains seem to be continuous.

“We ask the district disaster committee to take quick action on relief of the affected people,” Chemonges pleaded. Everline Chemos, a resident of Cheborom cell in Chepsukunya town council said that, the storm forced her together with her six children to the take shelter at the relatives’ home as she contemplates her next action.

“I hope the government will support us to roof the houses again,” said Chemos. Peter Satya, the former Chairperson of Ngenge Sub County says that they have started communicating to the district disaster committee and they are waiting for the response. He says that affected families need urgent help with relief items like food and bedding.

Hope Atuihare, the Kween Resident district commissioner says that her office has received the incident report and calls asking for help specifically food items and shelter as a result of the hailstorm. Atuihare explains that they are already in the process of securing the relief items and has also instructed the leadership of the affected areas to compile a comprehensive report which will be submitted to the office of the Prime Minister for more support-URN.
