One person has died and several others sustained injuries following an accident involving a campaign vehicle for Soroti County MP Patrick Aeku, an NRM aspirant in the ongoing party primaries. The incident occurred in Kamuda Sub County, Soroti District, where a crowd had gathered to receive cash handouts from Aeku’s campaign team.
Eyewitness Paul Eupa said the tragedy struck as the vehicle overturned amidst the crowd. An unidentified person reportedly fell from the moving vehicle and was run over by its tires, dying on the spot. Benard Eweru, chairman of Aeku’s campaign team, confirmed the incident and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.
“While the campaign had concluded successfully, it’s unfortunate that one of our supporters succumbed to injuries related to the accident,” Eweru said. He added that the team is caring for the injured and is in contact with the deceased’s family to support burial arrangements.
Soroti District Police Commander (DPC) Moses Olang identified the deceased as Samuel Okello. He confirmed that police had retrieved the body from the scene and that a postmortem examination would be conducted. “We are actively investigating the matter as we have not yet located the vehicle involved in the accident, and the driver is still at large,” Olang said. The incident has sparked concern over safety during political campaigns, particularly the responsibility of candidates and their teams in managing crowds and ensuring the safe operation of campaign vehicles-URN.
