The National Unity Platform-NUP has strengthened its grip in Jinja city after winning mayoral seats in both Southern and Northern divisions.
NUP’s Simon Kasirye earned 5035 votes to earn the Southern division mayoral seat, beating close rival Rodgers Anjoga, with 3819 votes.
Faruwa Kitakule of the National Resistance Movement-NRM came in third with 3608 votes.
The race attracted eight candidates, where Musisi Kibugujju, who contested as an independent candidate, earned the fourth position with 1290 votes. Abubaker Maganda, of the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC, earned 823 votes, Umar Mutengu of the People’s Front for Freedom-PFF scored 237 votes, Fred Mwase of the Ecological Party of Uganda-EPU earned 190 votes, whereas Nassan Nzogi trailed with 66 votes.
Kasirye has promised inclusive leadership, where the social welfare of all is prioritized, irrespective of their political inclinations.
Kasirye says that he has been entrusted with a political office to selflessly address the needs of the people, a task that he pledges to execute on time.
Kasirye says that Jinja city grapples with road infrastructural challenges, and he plans to liaise with other leaders to lobby for the desirable transformation of Jinja South division as a whole.
Kasirye also pledges to champion youth empowerment through skilling, which will enable them to create meaningful livelihoods.
Meanwhile, NUP’s Ayub Wabika defeated 10 others with 10877 votes to win the Jinja North division mayoral seat.
NRM’s Iddi Samanya earned the second position with 8242 votes, whereas FDC’s Jolly Lukoya came in third with 1099 votes.
Wabika credits his victory on support of all people, whom he says committed themselves to vote for him amidst intimidation.
Wabika says that there were attempts at vote rigging at different polling stations, but he hailed members of the general public for exercising vigilance, which neutralized any chances of election malpractice.
Wabika positions himself as a uniting factor, ready to mobilize all people for development, rather than falling into divisive politics.
