The National Unity Platform- NUP party leadership in Kasese has publicly disowned individuals claiming to have crossed from the party to the National Resistance Movement party-NRM.
The party suggests that these claims are part of a larger stunt aimed at misleading local electorates into believing that NUP is losing political ground in the region.
On Tuesday, while President Yoweri Museveni was addressing members of NRM at Nakasero, the deputy speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebya, introduced Maryline Kabugho, as NUP flag bearer for Busongora South constituency in Kasese.
However, Kabugho has previously contested in the NRM primaries for the Bunyangabu district women parliamentary seat but did not win.
John Twine was also presented as a NUP candidate to have withdrawn from the Ntoroko County MP race and yet the party didn’t field a candidate in the area.
Brian Basisa, the NUP district chairperson for Kasese, clarified that they had selected Jackson Mbaju Kathika, a former FDC member, as the official party candidate for Busongora South.
He scoffed at the NRM for allegedly losing track of its members who participate in its internal primaries and for attempting to present individuals like Kabugho as NUP members when they are not.
Basisa emphasized that the declaration is a n indication that some individuals are being presented to President Museveni as defectors from other parties, even those many have never been affiliated with opposition.
Mbaju says that while more than five persons were presented as NUP flag bearers to have withdrawn from the race, the party only recognizes Jeniffer Kabasinguzi who was its candidate for the Bundibugyo district woman parliamentary seat.
Mbaju thinks these lies are made to hoodwink the president and possible get money out of him.
Abdu Rahim Jocknus Baluku, the NUP registrar for Bunyangabu, thinks this is a new political gimmick by NRM where they use their own members to present the opposition as weakening force.
He says, they are committed to counter these actions.
Efforts to get a comment from Kabugho and Twimne were still futile as they couldn’t be reached by phone at the time of filing this story.
