Insiders within NUP say that there is growing confidence and hope that Kyagulanyi is going to win and beat Museveni hands down in the January 15th elections.
Insiders say that a committee of eminent lawyers has secretly been created and tasked to prepare to inquire into the circumstances under which the Byabakama electoral commission has been denominating candidates to create way for strong Museveni supporters and ministers to retain their MP seats unopposed and without competition.
Already more than 10 senior Museveni supporters have been declared unopposed for their MP seats including speaker Anita Among, deputy speaker Thomas Tayebwa, vice president Jessica Alupo and others.
In Buyende, Among’s husband Moses Magogo Budiope east is on the verge of being declared unopposed following the controversial denomination of his leading opponent Daniel Mulirire, a former policeman who resigned from the force on April 15th 2024 to join politics.
The EC denominated him a few days ago claiming that he hadn’t resigned within 90 days to nominations day as required by the law. Available documentation from the Uganda police headquarters shows that on April 15th 2024, Ms Dorah Abigaba acted on IGP’s behalf and signed off Mulirire’s resignation approval.
Mulirire’s removal leaves Magogo to face very weak candidates including Resty Nsiro, Stephen Bangalana and Robinson Peere of PFF. The three are already facing petitions at EC which has been asked to investigate them for using forged nomination signatures. Mulirire has already hired lawyer David Ngobi to sue the EC in the high court to challenge his denomination.
The Kavule NUP head offices insider says that once he becomes president on Jan 15, Kyagulanyi is going to set up a commission of inquiry to organize public meetings to investigate the fraud EC has been committing on the directives of powerful Museveni supporters, to have their opponents denominated.
The source adds that Kyagulanyi has realised the EC decision to unfairly denominate candidates is very unpopular among all Ugandans including many from inside the NRM.
He believes doing that reversing EC’s denomination decisions will make him even more popular and help him win over even NRM cadres who have seen the injustices of the EC as many would-be NRM independents have been sacrificed by the EC through denomination in order to please the more powerful Museveni supporters who are dying to be unopposed since that has now become the best way to demonstrate political might and invincibility in upcountry districts.
The source adds that Kyagulanyi realized the happiness the crowd showed in Bukedea last week at his rally when he announced that his government would cancel Anita Among’s victory and ensure that a by-election is organized to give the people of Bukedea a chance to vote instead of having a leader imposed on them by the EC.
The NUP insider says this guided the principal to realize the extent to which Ugandans are angry with Museveni’s supporters declaring themselves unopposed and that this issue is annoying many people even inside NRM.
The source adds that Kyagulanyi also intends to have a committee in place consisting of senior lawyers and retired eminent judges to audit and inquire into many of the controversial court cases and judgments that have come out of the judiciary under Alfonse Owinyi-Dollo’s tenure as the chief justice.
Kyagulanyi believes that many of those judgments were politically influenced instead of being purely based on evidence, the law and legal reasoning. He is also motivated by the endorsement by the ULS whose president Isaac Ssemakadde declared him their candidate for president and Erias Lukwago for lord mayorship.
