The National Resistance Movement (NRM) won all Women’s Committee positions across Mukono District as elections were conducted peacefully in the district’s 97 parishes on Friday. The only dispute was reported came in Seeta Ward, where supporters of rival candidates exchanged words shortly after results were announced, but election officials quickly restored calm.
At the Seeta CU polling station, voting began on a calm note after election officials arrived at around 8:00 a.m. Candidates Adrine Atuhire of the NRM and independent Janet Nakitto also arrived early ahead of the exercise.
Polling commenced at about 11:30 a.m. after Presiding Officer Asha Nabukwasi Michelle verified the voters’ register, identified eligible voters and briefed them on the voting process. Atuhire was declared the winner after securing 23 votes against Nakitto’s 15.
Moments after the declaration, supporters of the losing candidate accused the winners of monopolising leadership positions and denying women from other villages an opportunity to lead. The disagreement remained verbal, and election officials intervened before the situation could escalate.
An emotional scene unfolded shortly afterwards when Atuhire broke down in tears and briefly collapsed. Fellow committee members and residents rushed to assist her until she recovered.
Residents who spoke after the election urged the newly elected leaders to prioritise women’s economic empowerment through effective implementation of the Parish Development Model (PDM), vocational skills development and support for income-generating projects.
In her victory remarks, Atuhire pledged to ensure women in Seeta Ward benefit from government programmes and promised to work towards improving their livelihoods.
She also said she would mobilise support to ensure the NRM retains power in the 2031 general elections.
Mukono District NRM Women’s Chairperson and the party’s National Executive Committee representative for Buganda women, Julie Nasuuna, welcomed the outcome, saying the party had secured all Women’s Committee positions across the district.
She thanked party leaders and supporters for their mobilisation efforts and urged the newly elected leaders to serve all women regardless of political affiliation.
“Our responsibility is to unite women and ensure government programmes benefit every household,” Nasuuna said.
Mukono District Returning Officer George William Eliau described the elections as peaceful, saying polling was successfully conducted in all 97 parishes.
He commended women for maintaining discipline throughout the exercise.
According to preliminary Electoral Commission figures, the NRM fielded 450 candidates during nominations, while the National Unity Platform (NUP) nominated 17 candidates, the Democratic Party (DP) one candidate and 58 candidates contested as independents. Eliau said the peaceful conduct of the elections reflected growing participation by women in grassroots leadership and local governance-URN.
