NRM Secretary General Welcomes Party Historicals Ahead of Upcoming Elections

By KT Reporter

The Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Richard Todwong, has today received hundreds of long-serving party veterans as the nation prepares for the forthcoming general elections.

These party veterans, referred to as historicals, played active roles under the Movement system prior to Uganda’s transition to a multi-party political framework.

“These are seasoned party cadres who were instrumental during the Movement era. Many have since retired but continue to play active roles within their communities on a voluntary basis,” Todwong remarked.

He noted that the returning veterans had expressed concern over recent developments during the party primaries. As senior party members, they felt compelled to return and assist in reconciling and guiding party members at the grassroots level.

“They’ve reorganized themselves as a supportive force committed to strengthening party unity at the district level and mentoring current leaders, many of whom lack a deep ideological understanding,” Todwong explained.

He emphasized that these returning cadres, having been part of the Movement’s foundational structure, are eager to contribute to the current leadership, which they perceive as ideologically lacking in understanding the core values of the revolution.

Todwong also stated that he would report this development to the party National Chairman, President Yoweri Museveni, for further direction.

“Personally, I believe these veterans can play a critical role in various aspects of the party’s work. They joined out of deep conviction and carry with them a wealth of revolutionary experience. Their continued voluntary service is driven by a desire to preserve the legacy they helped build,” Todwong added.

“They aim to support the party through mobilisation, conflict resolution, and instilling a sense of purpose in our local-level leaders reminding them why they serve and helping them reconnect with the needs of the people.”

Petitions Update

On the matter of election-related petitions, Todwong stated that the party is awaiting decisions from the independent tribunal.

“As we’ve consistently said, neither the party secretariat nor the NRM electoral commission interferes with the tribunal’s processes. The tribunal operates independently, and we, too, await its rulings,” he affirmed.

Meanwhile, the Director for External Affairs in the party, Maj. (Rtd) Pollar Awich, applauded the returning historicals for their willingness to mentor young party members. He emphasized that many of the youth taking interest in leadership require guidance to mature into responsible leaders.

“Young people, especially those aspiring for leadership roles, need mentoring from those who truly understand the party’s foundation. This mentorship initiative is crucial for preparing youth to lead at various levels—local council, district, and even national,” Awich stated.
