Police in Dokolo District have apprehended 14 people allegedly hired from Lira City to disrupt today’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary elections in the area.
They were intercepted from the Rego-Rego trading centre along the Lira-Dokolo highway, just a few kilometres from Dokolo town on Thursday, travelling in a motor vehicle, Reg No UBP 983P, a taxi drone. They were intercepted
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest, saying although their motive is not yet known, it is believed they intended to disrupt the elections happening today.
The suspects are currently being held at Dokolo Central Police Station (CPS) where the vehicle is also parked. Okema, who argued that bouncers are not a recognised security institution, warned them against getting involved in security work.
We argue with all candidates, agents and supporters to ensure peaceful, free and fair electoral processes. Do not intimidate or suppress voters, including hiring of goons or bouncers. As police, we shall provide and ensure a conducive environment for peaceful elections.”
Meanwhile, Barbara Akech, the Dokolo Resident District Commissioner, says the situation is now calm, although intelligence indicates that some bouncers are still moving freely within the district.
She rallied all candidates to “be calm, patient, wait peacefully for the official declaration of results and celebrate accordingly.”-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
