The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has released a roadmap for elections for primaries for 11 positions for the topmost Committee of the National Youth Council-NYC and fixed polls for next week.
The road map was released by the party’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr Tanga Odoi, on Friday at the NRM Electoral Commission offices.
Addressing the media on Friday, Dr Tanga said that the elections for the National Youth Council will be held on Tuesday, starting at 9:00 a.m. at the party’s electoral commission offices. He asked eligible youth between the ages of 18 and 30 years who are interested in contesting for leadership positions in the National Youth Council to write formally to the party’s electoral commission expressing interest.
He explained that the elections will cover positions such as the district Chairperson of the National Youth Council, the Secretary for Female Youth, the Secretary for Finance, one youth representative with a disability, and four youth representatives nominated by the Uganda National Students Association.
Dr Tanga further stated that only registered NRM members will be allowed to participate in these primaries, and no independent candidates will be accepted.
“Expression of interest and nominations will run concurrently from today up to Monday 29th September, 2025”, said Dr Tanga. He added that the Mode of election shall be by Lining Up.
“Each Candidate shall appoint not more than two (2) Polling Agents from members of the Electoral College to witness the polling process. The Agents must report at the Polling Station with duly-signed appointment letters (2 copies) issued by the candidate”, said Dr Tanga.
Dr Tanga noted that the Register for the election is ready and that it will be displayed both at the party headquarters and at the District Offices for Candidates and voters to scrutinise.
“You are encouraged to report any anomaly on the Register. On polling day, before polling, the Register will be read out (District by District) to separate eligible voters from non-eligible voters”, he added.
He also warned all those intending to contest, urging them to stay away from acts of bribery, electoral malpractice, and any form of misconduct. He said the party will take action against anyone found engaging in corrupt activities during the election period.
The National Youth Council is currently headed by Jacob Eyeru, whose term of office and that of 10 other members is nearing completion.
The release of the election roadmap comes at a time when President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the NRM national chairman, recently warned against corruption, intrigue, and divisionism in internal party elections.
During the NRM Delegates Conference, the Party Chairman expressed concern that some individuals were using dishonest means to win positions within the party, and he called on both candidates and party leaders to uphold the values of discipline, honesty, and patriotism.
Museveni said such negative practices not only damage the party’s image but also weaken its strength and unity from within.
There are several other pending elections within the NRM Party, including within the Elderly League.
Although the party seemed to have concluded the exercise, on Thursday, the NRM Election Disputes Tribunal, headed by Lawyer John Musiime, nullified the victory of Jacqueline Mbabazi’s victory as the Parliamentary flag bearer for the Elderly people in Western Uganda and ordered fresh elections in 14 days.
The Electoral Commission is yet to set a new date for fresh elections.
