There is no major breakthrough in the investigations in which suspected arsonists attacked a farm in Butibulongo village, Katale Kammese Parish, Kito Sub-County, and injured several workers, setting four makeshift tents and four vehicles.
The incident occurred on January 26, 2025, targeting the farm owned by a man named Mayinja. An unidentified group armed with machetes and sticks invaded the premises, assaulting workers who were asleep in their tents. The attackers inflicted injuries on several individuals, prompting the workers to flee the scene.
The assailants subsequently set fire to four makeshift tents and four vehicles, including a Canter Elf (Registration Number UAM 252Q) and a Pajero (Reg. No. UAS 044J). A tractor was burnt beyond recognition, and a bulldozer was also destroyed.
The intruders made off with an unspecified quantity of fuel and other valuable items from the camp.
Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police spokesperson, informed Uganda Radio Network (URN) that a case of arson and malicious damage to property was filed. He noted that the injured individuals were transported to a hospital for treatment and that police were conducting a manhunt for the suspects involved in this incident.
When asked about the status on the hunt for the attackers, Twiineamazima stated that there has been no breakthrough and the suspects remain at large. “No update as of now,” read part of Twiineamazima’s message to URN.
Arson attacks continue to pose a significant threat in the Savannah region, which includes the Luwero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola Districts. For instance, in November 2024, police in Luwero District initiated an investigation into an arson incident targeting a surveyor’s vehicle amid a growing land dispute. This incident occurred in Kibula-Nsanvu village, located in Bwaziba Parish, Luwero Sub-County.
According to Sam Twiineamazima, authorities received a distress call regarding a land conflict in the area. A team from Luwero Central Police Station was dispatched to the scene, where they discovered a vehicle burnt beyond recognition.
Investigators recovered items, including sticks and jackets, believed to be linked to the incident. A case of malicious property damage was filed, but the perpetrators remain at large. The vehicle reportedly belonged to surveyors evaluating a parcel of land claimed by multiple parties-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
