Police in Nwoya district are holding nine suspects at Nwoya Central Police Station for allegedly possessing an illegal firearm. The suspects are Calvin Ojok, Richard Bongomin, Concy Abalo, Jaspher Ngure, David Mwaka, Ronald Anywar, Emmanuel Olara, Emmanuel Okello, and Denis Ojona.
They were arrested during an intelligence-led operation on the night of April 26, 2025, in Pakawera village, Langele parish, Lii Sub County. Reagan Magombe, the Nwoya District Police Commander, confirmed the arrests and said police recovered an SMG rifle registered under UG 5021-2000, containing five rounds of live ammunition, hidden on the roof of a grass-thatched hut.
This marks the fourth recovery of an illegal firearm in Nwoya district within two months. On April 20, 2025, police recovered a G3 NATO gun with eight rounds of ammunition in Genge sub-village. Magombe attributed the growing presence of illegal firearms to conflict in neighboring South Sudan.
“We have recently increased community policing and also planted intelligence officers at the grassroots, and because of this, people are willingly giving information to the police,” says Magombe.
He said police have intensified intelligence gathering and community outreach to recover more illegal weapons. The District Police Commander noted that the nine suspects are expected to appear in court on Wednesday-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
