Two non-governmental organizations, Innovation Africa and Give Directly, have been commended for their outstanding role in economically transforming communities in Nakapiripirit District. Operating across different sub-counties, Innovation Africa has been instrumental in improving access to solar-powered water and lighting systems, sparking a notable rise in school enrolment, and enhancing healthcare services.

Meanwhile, Give Directly has been delivering unconditional cash grants to vulnerable households, empowering families to lift themselves out of poverty. On Thursday, the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development awarded the two organizations in recognition of their remarkable efforts to empower and transform vulnerable communities.

State Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Esther Anyakun, applauded the organizations for their contributions toward increasing household incomes and water coverage in Nakapiripirit. Anyakun noted that Innovation Africa’s work in installing solar-piped water systems in settlements (Manyattas) struggling to access clean water had led to a substantial improvement in water coverage.

“Initially, in the last four years, the district had water coverage of 58 percent, but now it has increased to 77.8 percent,” Anyakun said. She also praised Give Directly for its pivotal role in addressing household poverty by providing direct cash support.

“The organization has been giving cash grants of 3.5 million shillings to individuals in 10,848 households across Nakapiripirit District,” Anyakun explained. She emphasized that the initiative complements the government’s Parish Development Model program and contributes to the objectives of the National Development Plan, which aims to lift over 3.5 million households out of poverty.

Anyakun further highlighted that the interventions by the two organizations have helped improve infrastructure, healthcare access, and housing within the district.
