Namisindwa District leaders on Monday launched the rehabilitation of the 9.8-kilometre Bubutu–Magale Road, a project expected to improve transportation and market access for farmers in the district. The launch was held at Mufutu Trading Centre in Bumwambu Sub-county and will benefit residents of Magale Town Council, Bumwambu Sub-county and Bubutu Town Council.
Speaking at the launch, Namisindwa District Roads Inspector Victor Mafumo, who represented the District Engineer, said the works will involve shaping the road, murraming six kilometres and installing culverts. Mafumo said the project will cost Shs180 million under the Road Fund for the 2025/2026 Financial Year and that construction works will commence immediately.
“We expect the works to take one month from the date of launch,” he said. Namisindwa District LCV Chairperson Emma Bwayo welcomed the rehabilitation project but disagreed with the plan to murram only six kilometres of the road. Bwayo said the murram coverage should be extended to the entire 9.8-kilometre stretch to ensure a better road standard and long-term durability.
He noted that the road is critical for farmers transporting agricultural produce to nearby markets, adding that improved accessibility would boost household incomes. Bwayo also pledged to closely monitor the quality of the works. “I am going to move with an inch-six nail along the road to make sure that the murram laid is enough and of good quality before commissioning the works,” he said.
Bosco Washable, the Secretary for Production, Works and Natural Resources and councillor representing Magale Sub-county, urged the engineering team to ensure value for money by delivering quality work. “We want quality work so that taxpayers get value for their money,” Washable said.
Namisindwa District Chief Administrative Officer Joseph Lomongin warned residents against blocking water channels, saying the practice contributes to the rapid deterioration of roads. He urged local leaders to identify and report residents who obstruct drainage systems to protect the district’s road infrastructure. The Namisindwa Resident District Commissioner, Elijah Madoi, also cautioned residents against carrying out farming activities and construction within road reserves. Madoi warned that any structures or crops found within road reserves during maintenance works would be removed without compensation-URN.
