The State Minister for Higher Education, Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, has cautioned mobilisers of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Luwero District against engaging in violence during the ongoing general election period.
Dr. Muyingo made the remarks while addressing hundreds of NRM mobilisers gathered in Ziroobwe Sub-county, drawn from several parishes including Kakakala, Nambi, Nakigoza, and Ngalonkalu.
He said the government would not hesitate to take action against anyone violating the law, regardless of political affiliation. Muyingo, who is also a former Bamunanika County Member of Parliament, emphasized that although election periods can be emotionally charged, NRM members must remain disciplined and peaceful. Muyingo noted that some individuals may be tempted to resort to violence, but NRM mobilisers must not be among them. Muyingo urged party agents to respect the voters they are seeking to persuade.
He advised mobilisers to ignore calls for violence and to carefully choose their words when engaging the public, noting that political messaging during the election season should promote unity rather than confrontation.
. Muyingo further stressed that under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s leadership, there would be no tolerance for electoral violence, adding that peace and order are central to the NRM’s values.
According to the Electoral Commission (EC) roadmap, Ugandans will go to the polls on Thursday, January 15, 2026, to elect the President and Members of Parliament.
The EC confirmed that eight candidates are contesting for the presidency. They include incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (NRM), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine (National Unity Platform – NUP), Elton Joseph Mabirizi (Conservative Party – CP), Robert Kasibante (National Peasants Party – NPP), Nathan Nandala Mafabi (Forum for Democratic Change – FDC), Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntu (Alliance for National Transformation – ANT), Mubarak Munyagwa Sserunga (Common Man’s Party – CMP), and Frank Bulira Kabinga (Revolutionary People’s Party – RPP).
In Parliament, a total of 529 seats are available in the 2026 general elections. These comprise 353 constituency seats, 146 District Woman Representative seats, and 30 special interest group seats representing older persons, youth, persons with disabilities, and workers.
The EC reports that 2,711 candidates were nominated to contest the 519 directly elected parliamentary seats. Of these, 2,703 candidates are actively campaigning, while eight candidates were elected unopposed.
