The Executive Director of the National Planning Authority (NPA), Joseph Muvawala, has challenged government to support the country’s e-mobility agenda by purchasing electric vehicles from Kiira Motors Corporation.

Muvawala said the successful showcase of electric vehicles, motorcycles, and other related innovations demonstrates Uganda’s ability to drive the e-mobility revolution. He urged all government entities to actively champion Kiira Motors, which he said is now capable of producing e-mobility solutions to meet consumer needs.

According to Muvawala, most polluting vehicles run on fossil fuels, making it imperative for government institutions to embrace electric mobility in order to build a greener ecosystem.

He explained that electric vehicles are not only environmentally friendly but also cheaper to maintain compared to fossil-fuel-powered vehicles, making them more durable for both personal and institutional use. He noted that the creation of a green ecosystem will reduce harmful emissions, improve community health, and provide stable revenue for the state-owned vehicle manufacturer, Kiira Motors.

Muvawala revealed that the country is targeting the use of only electric motorcycles by 2030, with electric vehicles expected to dominate public transport by 2050. He said this transition will reduce fossil fuel emissions and improve air quality, especially in major towns and cities.

He further emphasized that the shift will have both health and economic benefits by reducing respiratory-related illnesses linked to air pollution while also attracting investors to strengthen Uganda’s e-mobility sector.

Muvawala also noted that as Uganda targets economic growth from the current USD 60 billion to USD 600 billion, there is a need for deliberate investments in sectors with proven growth potential, such as the green energy ecosystem. He argued that with mindset change and the right focus on green financing, particularly in e-mobility, Uganda’s growth targets are achievable.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Kiira Motors Corporation, Paul Musasizi, said the plant is the largest on the continent and is playing a key role in Africa’s e-mobility transformation. He explained that beyond vehicle manufacturing, Kiira is actively shaping the broader e-mobility ecosystem through the deployment of EV charging infrastructure and the development of business models such as mobility-as-a-service to empower entrepreneurs.

Musasizi added that through the ongoing e-mobility expo, Kiira Motors has built a strong platform for integration, bringing together more than 5,000 players to foster partnerships and accelerate investment, consolidating Uganda’s position as a leader in Africa’s green mobility revolutio
