President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and his Kenyan counterpart, President William Samoei Ruto, have pledged significant support to the health and education sectors in the Sebei sub-region, in a move aimed at improving social services for communities in the area.

The commitments were made during the commissioning of the UGX 7.2 billion St. Peter’s Cathedral in Kapchorwa District on Sunday, September 28, an event that attracted high-profile religious, political, and diplomatic leaders from Uganda and Kenya.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, President Museveni pledged to ensure full staffing, essential drug supply, and complete equipment for St. Peter’s Hospital—an important health facility expected to supplement government hospitals in the region. “We shall ensure that St. Peter’s Hospital is fully equipped with both medical staff and essential medicines. The people of Sebei deserve quality healthcare,” Speaker Among said while reading Museveni’s speech.

Museveni reiterated the government’s commitment to improving service delivery in hard-to-reach areas like Sebei, stressing that access to quality health care remains a cornerstone of national development.

Meanwhile, Kenyan President William Ruto, through Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, pledged UGX 30 million to support education and health in Sebei.

He also promised to deliver a school bus before the end of the year to serve the nursing school affiliated with St. Peter’s Hospital. “President Ruto sends his greetings and support to the people of Uganda, especially here in Kapchorwa. He has committed UGX 30 million towards the development of the school and promises to purchase a school bus to ease transport challenges faced by nursing students,” Murkomen said.

Speaker Among also announced her personal contribution of UGX 50 million in support of the same cause, commending the strong bilateral ties between Uganda and Kenya, particularly among bordering communities. “The Sebei and Kenyan communities share blood, heritage, and destiny. Let us continue to work together in education, health, and trade for the benefit of our people,” she said.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, who presided over the commissioning ceremony, urged leaders to integrate spiritual and moral guidance into their development agenda, especially for the youth. “As we celebrate infrastructure and development, let us not forget the spiritual and moral foundation of our society. Our young people need both direction and opportunity,” Archbishop Kaziimba said.

The newly commissioned St. Peter’s Cathedral is now the official seat of the Sebei Diocese. Its construction, which spanned more than a decade, was made possible through the collective efforts of local Christians and international partners. The cathedral is expected to serve not only as a place of worship but also as a hub for community development initiatives across the region.
