Fresh information shows that veteran musician and Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu was killed in the early hours of Thursday morning while dropping off a woman in Kibuli, Makindye Division, Kampala. Matovu, 77, was attacked at around 5:40 a.m. near Lubowa Mosque, located along Lubuga Road in Kibuli Market A Zone, within Makindye Division, a Kampala suburb.
According to Medie Mutebi, a resident of Kibuli Central and neighbour to the late Matovu, the musician was returning from a music show at Serena Hotel. Mutebi says Matovu was driving his Range Rover Discovery, registration number UAR 982H, with three other people. He first dropped two of them along the main road before proceeding to drop a woman, whom residents identified as Rose Tusiime.
“When she got out of the car, the two who were moving on the motorcycle also parked behind the vehicle and started assaulting the girl, so Matovu came out of the vehicle and tried to intervene to rescue the girl. In the process, one of them punched him, and he fell badly on the pavement and injured his head,” Mutebi said. Mutebi said the attackers fled the scene after the assault.
Paul Dyogo, a boda boda rider who rushed Matovu to Kibuli Hospital, said the musician was bleeding heavily. “He was bleeding, and urine was passing through him. When the doctors received him and started giving him first aid, after about 30 minutes they told us that he had died,” Dyogo said.
“The girl he was dropping took off. Everyone knows her; she is a commercial sex worker in this place. The killers bypassed me on speed, but I can say that they were accusing him of eating their money and going with other people,” Dyogo said.
Juma Malunywa, one of his workmates, said they had been together at the music show at Serena. “We were together at the music show at Serena when he told us that he was going to sleep. In a few moments, we heard that he was waylaid along the way,” Malunywa said.
“His daughter called me that Matovu had died, which was shocking. I came rushing to see what happened, to learn that he was punched while dropping one of the people he was with last night. This is so sad to this nation that we continue to lose lives in this manner,” he added.
Zaam Namatoovu, a daughter of the deceased who was found at the scene of the crime, said the family had just finished prayers when someone raised an alarm that her father had been attacked.
“We had finished prayers when someone came making an alarm that my father had been killed. When we rushed to the scene, we were informed that he was taken to the hospital. Upon reaching there, we got the shocking news that he had breathed his last,” Namatoovu said.
She, however, noted that her father had never been seen in Market Zone before, since he attends prayers at Kibuli Mosque.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed that Kabalagala Police had registered a case of suspected murder. Police were still combing the crime scene by the time of publishing this story, while Matovu’s Range Rover had been towed to Kabalagala Police Division as investigations unfold-URN.
