Different courts in Kampala have remanded 110 youths who were arrested over post-election violence last week.
The group has been charged with obstruction and common nuisance, contrary to Sections 221(b) and 148 of the Penal Code Act, respectively. They appeared before the Mwanga II Magistrate’s Court and the KCCA Magistrate’s Court.
At the Mwanga II Court, the suspects were accused of undue influence on voters by allegedly inducing them to vote for National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, as well as obstructing voters on polling day.
Other suspects who appeared before Nicholas Aisu, the Senior Principal Grade One Magistrate at City Hall Court, denied the charges. All the accused were remanded to Luzira Prison until January 28.
The prosecution alleges that on January 17, while at Komamboga Central Zone in Kampala District, the suspects willfully and unlawfully obstructed police officers who were executing their lawful duties during night patrols.
The state further alleges that the group blocked roads and burned tyres while accusing the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party of rigging the election.
