Residents of Bombo Village, Nakwaya Parish, Kikandwa Sub-County, Mityana District have received a solar water project worth Shillings 900 million thanks to the Ministry of Water and Environment.
The project, awarded to Nexus Green Contractors, took six months to complete. While handing over the project, Assistant Resident District Commissioner Peter Kimera cautioned residents against vandalism and destruction of government property.
Kimera noted that many government projects have been destroyed by residents, who then blame the government for not helping them. He said directives have been issued to shoot any person found vandalizing government projects.
Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Jack Byaruhanga thanked the government for the work done and highlighted that in the last two years, major water projects have been implemented in the district. One such project in Kalangaalo Sub-County will serve over five parishes.
District Water Officer James Ssonko emphasized that the water supplied is not free; residents must pay for it to ensure sustainability.
Shahid Muliika, an engineer from the Ministry of Water and Environment, explained that the project was financed through borrowed funds from England, and residents are expected to pay for services to help repay the loan. He added that the contract, valued at 900 million shillings, has extended water to three villages and installed 19 water taps across the area.
Jackline Nakasagga, also from the Ministry, urged residents to protect the project and warned that contractors cannot be blamed if it is vandalized. She added that the Ministry will monitor its upkeep.
Vice Chairperson of Kikandwa sub-County, Huzaifa Ssenyonjo, thanked landowners who provided plots for the project and requested the water engineer to expand services to other villages.
Abraham Luwalira, Chairperson of Wabinyira Village, said access to water reduces domestic violence in families.
Sseguya Nicolas, Chairperson of the Water Committee, urged residents to increase the capacity of water usage so that neighboring villages can also benefit.
