By KT ReporterMathias Mpuuga has done what amounts to belling the cat inside NUP by being the first insider who had the guts to look emperor Kyagulanyi in the eye and boldly tell him that “Sir you are naked.” That’s called belling the cat namely calling out a leader and telling them the discomforting truths at the time no one else is prepared to.
By calling out the emperor, costly as it has been, Mpuuga did to Bobi Wine what Kizza Besigye did to Museveni inside NRM as early as 1999 when no one else was prepared to face the dire consequences of doing such a thing. Besigye articulated his dissent in writing and showed the world how the President had diverted from the ideals they went to fight for in the bush.
Even when he knew what would happen and how fiercely the so-called foot soldiers like Lumbuye would react and tell all manner of lies in order to impeach his character, Mpuuga took the risk because that merely was the right thing to do and called out Kyagulanyi who many up to this day can’t dare tell anything he doesn’t want to hear.
At the time when peers like Betty Nambooze, Muwanga Kivumbi and others choose sycophancy in order to get positions and NUP party backing to secure reelection (new employment contracts for their current jobs), Mpuuga chose the painful path of belling the cat because in his view, some of Bobi Wine’s inadequacies were too glaring to be swept under the carpet.
He indeed invited to himself trouble which he seems to have taken years emotionally preparing for. As a well cultured and mentored leader, Mpuuga patiently put up with the Kyagulanyi madness and quit only publicly when time was ripe for that and he shrewdly managed to fracture NUP, wreck the boat and in the process walk away with several leaders including sitting MPs like Joyce Bagala, Abed Bwanika, Michael Kakembo, Juliet Kakande and others.
Outside Parliament he managed to galvanise a powerful coalition comprising of veteran fighters like Moses Kasibante, Lubega Mukaku, Mabikke, Henry Lubowa and others. In Masaka, he got away with several elected leaders including Nyendo-Mukungwe Mayor Naku Musana, Matete LC3 Chairman Baker Byayi etc.
Mpuuga also managed to demonstrate that Kyagulanyi’s control over social media narratives had been exaggerated. For sometime, his warriors managed to scatter the Kyagulanyi group on social media and put them on the periphery and on the defensive. Mpuuga’s squads turned out well organised with coherent content on WhatsApp groups, on twitter/X, Facebook and tik tok. His key warriors include Ntale Namuguzi, Defiant Martin, Nakato wa Mpuuga of Sabula TV, Denis T, Kayita, Mzee Deo Kijjambu and others.
They managed to beat Kyagulanyi aka president of social media on his own turf whereby for the first time, the NUP Principal begun crying foul and complaining of being a victim of social media propaganda and persecution yet he is the one who started all this character assassination years ago while targeting Dr. Besigye. Mpuuga also emboldened many disgruntled NUP people who had been bleeding internally while fearing the fat cats at Kavule and Kamwokya.
He went on to successfully contradict and demistify dictator Kyagulanyi on radios and TV. His supporters took the upper hand on CBS radio, BBS TV and time came when Kyagulanyi couldn’t even get anyone to appear on CBS’ Mambo Bado on Saturdays under Oscar Martin kintu to do his bidding.
This gradually created a very destructive war between Bobi Wine and Buganda. It was Mpuuga whose fallout corraborated claims that it was Magere instigating Lumbuye to abuse the Katikkiro, the Nabagereka, Kabaka’s brother and other officials at Mengo.
Mpuuga, who many had underestimated, further put Kyagulanyi in problems by driving a wedge between him and the Catholic Church before whose leaders the young man from Magere was portrayed as defiant and disrespectful.
Mpuuga also demonstrated there is life after or beyond the political prison callled NUP contrary to what his peers like Muwanga Kivumbi and Nambooze think up to this day. He moved on and founded his own political organisation called the DA instead of waiting to be humiliated by the Kyagulanyi gangs. He outsmarted and pulled the rug under their feet.
As a person, Mpuuga is calculative and confident of everything. He is a seasoned politician who only partnered with Kyagulanyi in 2021 as opposed to riding on his back to secure reelection. He is organically well grounded inside both Buganda Kingdom and the Catholic Church.
He is also a great man going by who he knows and is known to as well. Think Speaker Anita Among, Kabaka of Buganda, the Catholic Church bishops, Katikkiro Mayiga and others. He is a diehard childhood for whom decent leaders like Semujju Nganda say is worth dying for.
He is respected by politicians from across the isle because of his calmness, clarity of words and maturity which is why the likes of Ogenga Latigo can only envy the man having realised they can never equal him. This effective networking distinguishes Mpuuga as an effective builder of bridges.
He is also an excellent public speaker, who unlike stammering Rudicha speakers like Betty Nambooze and haters like Lutamaguzi Semakula, can speak fluently both in Luganda and English. He is also intelligent too as Kyagulanyi’s media advisor Derrick Wandera recently discovered during the Capital Gang show.
Mpuuga is composed with a thick skin which is why he can’t be diverted to lose his cool upon being provoked by WANNABE NUP salary earners like Alex Waisswa Mufumbiro or even treacherous traitors like Muwanga Kivumbi.
Going forward, the contradictions which Mpuuga an excellent team player and builder of political mobilisation teams, is no doubt going to annihilate NUP as the country counts down to 2026, like no one ever expected. He is the reason the NUP Principal, not used to being subjected to any scrutiny, is restless and doesn’t sleep anymore.
In fact, a paranoid Bobi Wine has privately been telling close confidants to pray for him because he is fearful Mpuuga is going to humiliate him especially by defeating whoever NUP ever fronts for his Nyendo-Mukungwe MP slot in 2026. Besides all the other credentials, Mpuuga is also significantly wealthy and not even his grand children will ever know or see poverty.
