Authorities in Mabaale Town Council, Kagadi District, have destroyed expired goods worth more than 3 million shillings following an operation targeting businesses accused of selling unsafe products. The goods, which were burnt during an exercise held at the town council grounds on Thursday, included skin jellies, sanitary pads, sanitizers, soft drinks, alcoholic kombucha, cooking oil, tea, Blue Band, animal feeds, battery acid, and other assorted products.
The operation was conducted by town council officials led by Senior Principal Township Officer Robert Semate, alongside Health Inspector Tumuramye Rauben, ward agents, and leaders from the local business community. Officials say the exercise was intended to protect consumers from harmful products and improve public health standards within the town council.
Semate urged traders—including supermarket operators, wholesalers, and hawkers—to regularly inspect their stock and remove expired items before authorities intervene. He also advised residents to always check expiry dates before purchasing goods, warning that consumption of expired products could expose people to serious health complications, including cancers and other diseases.
Semate further revealed that the town council is drafting new bylaws targeting the sale of expired goods and the management of stray animals. According to him, individuals found violating the proposed regulations could face fines or prosecution through the courts of law.
Health Inspector Tumuramye Rauben called on consumers to prioritise their safety, especially when buying products for children and household use. He assured the public that inspection operations would continue to ensure dangerous and expired products are removed from the market.
Meanwhile, the chairperson of the business community, Sentimba Richard Bagada, welcomed the exercise, saying it would help eliminate hazardous products and restore consumer confidence. Bagada pledged cooperation from traders and said the business community plans to organise meetings aimed at strengthening coordination and compliance, including in smaller trading centres across the town council.
Authorities say the crackdown will continue as part of broader efforts to improve public health and enforce standards in local markets-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
