The Christian community in Luwero is mourning the death of Rev. Fr. Simon Peter Ssessanga, the Secretary General of the Luwero–Nakasongola–Nakaseke Joint Christian Council (LUNANA J.C.C).

Fr. Ssessanga passed away on Monday morning at Bishop Ceaser Asili Memorial Hospital in Kasana, Luwero Town Council, where he had been receiving treatment following weeks of illness.

He was 72 years old, having been born on July 10, 1953. At the time of his passing, he was serving as a priest at St. Joseph the Worker Katikamu Parish.

Ordained on August 26, 1979, at Lubaga Cathedral, Fr. Ssessanga had recently marked 46 years of devoted priestly service. His pastoral commitment and leadership across the Diocese were widely admired.

In an official statement issued on behalf of the bishop, by the Kasana–Luweero Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Emmanuel Ssekyanzi Lyevuze, Rt. Rev. Lawrence Mukasa, the Ordinary of Kasana-Luweero Diocese, announced the “profoundly sorrowful” news of Fr. Ssessanga’s passing.

According to the statement, a copy of which Uganda Radio Network [URN] has received, a requiem Mass will be held at Katikamu Parish today, December 8, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., followed by an overnight vigil.

The Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., after which he will be laid to rest in the priestly cemetery at the parish.

“May the soul of our departed brother priest rest in eternal peace,” the statement reads in part. Fr. Ssessanga is remembered for his steadfast commitment to ecumenism and for spearheading the Joint Ecumenical Public Way of the Cross every Good Friday.

The initiative—uniting Catholics of the Kasana–Luweero Diocese, Anglicans of Luweero Diocese, and the Orthodox faithful—was first introduced under the late Bishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

Under Fr. Ssessanga’s coordination, the Way of the Cross grew into a profound symbol of unity and public witness, leaving an enduring legacy within the Christian fraternity of the region.
