The National Unity Platform-NUP presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobiwine has temporarily suspended his campaigns in Busoga sub region over what he termed as unfair treatment by police.
Kyagulanyi announced the suspension of his campaigns after being blocked from accessing Saza grounds in Iganga municipality where he was meant to hold his first rally.
On completing his rally in Mayuge district earlier on Friday, Kyagulanyi kicked off his journey for Iganga town as per his campaigning schedule.
Kyagulanyi’s team made a u-turn towards the Mayuge-Iganga road en-route to their planned first rally venue at Saza grounds in Iganga municipality.
He however, faced another roadblock in Mbale trading center in Imanyiro sub county, in Mayuge district, which is located about 10 Kilometers away from Iganga municipality.
Kyagulanyi who had attracted hundreds of his supporters from the neighboring areas following the 20 minutes long standoff with police, he resolved to address the eager crowds, some of whom were forcing their way through the heavily manned security roadblock.
Kyagulanyi explained that he has campaigned in Busoga for five days so far, but the campaign has been characterized with endless roadblocks, deterring him from accessing the major highways.
He said the deliberate roadblocks deter him from fully accessing his rally venues on time, forcing him to suspend the day’s planned activities like mini rallies.
Kyagulanyi explained that he spent over four hours from Jinja to Mayuge and the added roadblocks on their route to Iganga further exhausted their time.
He said his team would hold another harmonization meeting with the Electoral Commission leadership geared towards enabling them to reschedule their campaigns.
Kyagulanyi advised his team to maintain peace arguing that the endless security roadblocks are geared towards sparking violence, a move he advised them to ignore.
NUP flag bearer aspiring for the Iganga municipality parliamentary seat, Abed Mudiobole said they had secured all the police clearances, allowing to host their candidate but they were surprised with the police actions.
Mudiobole argues that security organs ought to exercise fairness with all presidential candidates as it not only saves time spent while holding their campaign meetings but equally creates order for other contestants to fairly hold their rallies interrupted.
Mudiobole is however, optimistic that, their candidate will be accorded ample time to conduct fresh campaigns in Iganga district, where he credits for having reasonable support for Kyagulanyi.
The Uganda Police Force issued a statement in response to candidate Kyagulanyi’s allegations. “We wish to clarify that today, 03 October 2025, they were scheduled to hold rallies in both Mayuge and Iganga districts. The rally in Mayuge was successfully held. On their way to Iganga, Candidate Sentamu and his group were advised to follow the agreed-upon route to Iganga Municipality and specifically to Namungale Grounds. However, they opted to take an alternative route where they encountered our cutoffs,” reads the statement.
