The Kyabazinga of Busoga, HRH, Gabula Nadiope IV, has launched this year’s Masaza cup tournament. The event took place on Sunday at Irundu Primary School in Buyende district.
This year’s edition of the tournament runs under the theme: “Men are the Pillars in Ending Teenage Pregnancy.” The initiative seeks to use sport as a platform to challenge and inspire men to take a more active role in reversing the rising cases of teenage pregnancy in the Busoga region.
Before his arrival, kingdom loyalists from different chiefdoms across the Busoga sub-region thronged Irundu primary school playground to join the Kyabazinga in launching one of the major sporting events in the Kingdom.
Local traders erected stands for fast foods, beverages and fresh fruits. Residents in the area were seen turning their compounds into parking yards, while others turned their washroom facilities, and charged a fee of 300 Shillings to access.
Alice Tusubira says that Irundu is strategically located, neighbouring the districts of Kaliro and Namutumba, respectively, which attracted spectators from these areas.
Tusubira, who operates a local food restaurant, says that she doubled the food prices from 2000 to 4000 Shillings.
Kevina Ajambo says that Irundu is located about five kilometres away from Lake Kyoga, and she averagely selling 30 pieces of mid-sized fresh fish daily before sun drying the surplus of 10 others, which is sold off cheaply in the preceding days.
Ajambo, however, says that, due to the high demand for fast food, she teamed up with fish mongers from other landing sites and they jointly sold 650 pieces of mid-sized fish pieces at a doubled fee of 10,000 Shillings, far from the 5000 Shillings they normally charge local customers in the area.
The event was also attended by the FUFA president, Moses Magogo, who is also the Budiope East MP.
Magogo hailed the partnership between Busoga Kingdom and MTN, which he said is key in nurturing footballing talents-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
