The Inspectorate of Government has accused leaders in Kotido district of being slow during the declaration of assets.

As of this week, 19% of district leaders, and 30% of municipality leaders have complied with the requirement, sparking concerns over transparency and accountability.

Jaram Magyezi Director of the Leadership Court Tribunal, said that the slow response is a worrying trend stating that most Political leaders tend to declare their assets on the last day, which is not secure. He says the declaration exercise which runs from the 1st to the 31st of March 2025 is a mandatory requirement for all leaders to declare their assets, incomes, and liabilities.

Magyezi also dismissed the possibility of an extension of the deadline saying the law doesn’t abide by the practice.

David Lokure, the Kotido District IT officer however blamed this on some of the leaders who are not conversant with the systems stating that some of them even forget their email addresses and when they show up on the last day they miss out citing the last exercise in which some of the leaders missed out on the declaration exercise.

Lokure urges them to turn up early so that some of the challenges can be addressed before the deadline.

Dr Patricia Achan Okiria, the Deputy IGG urged the leaders to take the declaration exercise seriously, cautioning that failure to comply may result in legal consequences.

Dr Achan says the Inspectorate of Government’s exercise aims to promote transparency, accountability, and good governance among leaders to ensure effective service delivery and the leaders should take advantage of the team that will be camping in the district up to the 21st of March to declare their assets-URN.
