Kisoro district councilors have overwhelmingly rejected a motion by LC5 chairperson Abel Bizimana to offer government land to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party for the construction of district offices. Currently, the party rents offices opposite the Gateway bus company near Kisoro main street.
During a council session at the district hall on Monday, Bizimana tabled a motion to allocate land located next to the Kisoro District Resident State Attorney’s office to the NRM for office construction. The motion was seconded by Deus Byamugisha, the Rubuguri Town Council representative, who also serves as the party’s district publicity secretary.
But several councilors strongly opposed the idea. Johns Mfitumukiza, representing Nyarusiza Sub County, and Juliey Kamusiime from Nyanamo Town Council, argued that the motion was unnecessary, saying NRM is a big political party whose members can raise funds to purchase land and build offices rather than receiving government land for free.
Agaba James, councilor for Southern Division, and Wilson Kazimili, representing Chahi Sub-County, also rejected the proposal. They questioned what would become of the land and offices if NRM was no longer in power in the future.
