Police at Kira Road division have arrested 42 suspected criminals. Police upon receiving several complaints from people targeted by criminals in the night hours decided to carry out an operation which led to the arrest of suspects in the areas of Mulimira, Kyebando and Kamwokya.

Deo Junjju, one of the people who witnessed the operation, said police surrounded the areas at around midnight and started picking suspected criminals from drainage channels. According to Junjju, police seemed to have gathered enough information about the suspects before carrying out the operation.

“Some of the people arrested appeared on the police’s list and they knew their names, their friends and where they were hiding. People were being picked in drainage channels which you would list expect a person to be living,” Junjju said.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, said the operation was extended to areas of Bukoto. Onyango explained that the operation started at midnight and went up to 4:00 am.

“It was an intelligence-led operation between 12:00 am and 4:40 am in areas including Kyebando, Mulimira, Kamwokya, and parts of Bukoto. The operation targeted individuals using drainage channels as hideouts and those pretending to engage in late-night betting while planning to cause chaos in the neighbourhood,” Onyango said.

Onyango applauded the local leaders who helped police identify black spots known to harbour criminals. Police said exhibits were also recovered during the operation, and the screening will be conducted to remain with those who will be arraigned in courts of law.
