Uganda’s long-distance running sensation Jacob Kiplimo has been appointed captain of Team Uganda ahead of the 2026 World Cross Country Championships, set for January 10, 2026, in Florida, United States.
Kiplimo, a former world cross country champion and one of Uganda’s most decorated and consistent distance runners, was unanimously selected by fellow athletes currently in residential training camp at the Biblical Taronong Institute in Kapchorwa.
The team is preparing under the guidance of Coach Peter Chelangat and Benjamin Njia, the Vice President in charge of Technical affairs. The leadership mantle passes from Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei, who has since shifted focus from cross country and track events to road racing and the marathon.
The transition reflects the athletes’ confidence in Kiplimo’s experience, maturity, and deep appreciation of Uganda’s rich cross-country heritage. Confirming the appointment, Coach Chelangat said the decision was athlete-driven and unanimous. “
Jacob Kiplimo’s legacy in cross country is unquestionable. The team entrusted him with this responsibility because leadership among athletes matters greatly. He has learned from the experience of his colleague Joshua Cheptegei, and that growth is clearly visible,” Chelangat said.
Kiplimo expressed gratitude for the confidence shown in him and called for unity and discipline as the team prepares to represent the country on the global stage.
“The trust my teammates have shown me is built on commitment and shared goals,” Kiplimo said. “We must handle the Ugandan flag with pride, protect its golden sporting legacy, and compete with love for our country.” Teammates described Kiplimo as a unifying force within the camp.
Joy Cheptoyek said his presence lifts morale and strengthens team spirit. “The encouragement Kiplimo gives is exceptional. It brings joy and motivation to the entire team,” Cheptoyek said.
Dan Kibet echoed similar sentiments, describing Kiplimo as more than just a teammate. “He puts a smile on everyone’s face during training and always pushes for greatness without despising anyone.
He loves upcoming athletes and constantly encourages the team. He is more of a mentor than just an athlete,” Kibet said. Team Uganda’s provisional squad features a blend of experience and emerging talent.
The senior men’s team includes Jacob Kiplimo (captain), Dan Kibet, Kenneth Kiprop, Deogracious Musobo, Dolphine Chelimo, and Emmanuel Kibet. The senior women’s team comprises Joy Cheptoyek, Sarah Cheangat, Rebecca Chelangat, Martha Chemutai, Kereen Chemisto, and Rispa Cherop.
In the junior men’s category are Abraham Cherotich, Jeremiah Kwemboi, Solomon Ndiema, Daniel Kiprotich Chelogoi, and Dan Kipyeko, while the junior women’s team includes Charity Cherop, Bentalin Yeko, Felister Chewemoi, and Peace Chebet. The mixed relay squad consists of Daniel Comboni, Silas Chemutai, Brenda Chekwemoi, and Sylvia Chelangat.
The team is expected to depart Uganda for the United States on January 6, 2026, as preparations intensify in Kapchorwa, a high-altitude training hub renowned for producing world-class distance runners. Officials say the final squad will be confirmed closer to the championships following trials, fitness assessments, and completion of international clearance procedures.
With Kiplimo at the helm, Team Uganda heads into the 2026 World Cross Country Championships with renewed confidence and high expectations, aiming to sustain the country’s strong presence on the global distance-running stage.
