Kikuube Councilor Arrested for Extorting UGX 20M from Job Seekers

Nicholas Kiiza, the workers’ male Councillor for Kikuube district, has been arrested for allegedly extorting 20 million shillings from job seekers.

Kiiza has been extorting money from various applicants applying for various jobs in the district promising to help connect them secure the jobs in the various departments in the district in vain.

Information obtained from Hoima police indicates that, recently, Kiiza extorted 20 million shillings from two applicants who are residents of Hoima city and had applied for jobs in Kikuube.

After failing to secure the jobs, the victims whose particulars have been concealed by police for fear of jeopardising investigations filed a case against Kiiza at Hoima city police station.

Police immediately swung into action and started investigating the matter, leading to Kiiza’s arrest and detention.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, says that many other victims have recorded statements implicating him.

He stated that detectives are working on Kiiza’s file, which will be forwarded to the Resident State Attorney for perusal and legal guidance once ready.

URN has reliably also established that several councilors in the district are being investigated for extorting money from job seekers.

In June 2022, several government officials and politicians in Kikuube were investigated over alleged extortion and corruption in the recruitment of workers.

Hundreds of job seekers were conned by district officials who demanded between 500,000 and 1,000,000 shillings from applicants, promising to help them secure jobs. Despite paying the money, these applicants did not appear on the shortlist.

In May 2022, a section of district councillors in Kikuube tabled a motion to censure three members of the District Executive Committee (DEC) over allegations of corruption, extortion, and forgery-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
