Katakwi District authorities have announced plans to meet all secondary school headteachers in a bid to address a growing wave of student strikes that has disrupted learning and caused widespread destruction of school property across the district. The move follows the latest strikes at Priscilla Girls Secondary School and Katakwi High School on the night of June 6, 2026, which left classrooms, administration blocks, school fences, CCTV cameras, the science library, a girls’ dormitory, and other property damaged.

The value of the destroyed property has not yet been established. Katakwi District LCV Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo said district leaders are concerned about the recurring unrest in secondary schools and are seeking to establish the root causes of the strikes. According to Omolo, district officials are meeting on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, with all secondary school headteachers to discuss school management and identify factors contributing to the unrest. He noted that preliminary findings from Priscilla Girls Secondary School pointed to disagreements between students and teachers, including concerns related to food and welfare issues.

Omolo said the district has recently experienced several strikes in learning institutions, including unrest at Katakwi Technical School, and warned that the trend requires urgent intervention. He urged parents to remain calm, assuring them that measures are being taken to restore normalcy and allow students to resume learning.

According to sources, students from Priscilla Girls Secondary School and Katakwi High School allegedly staged a coordinated strike over a ban on casual dress and what they described as harsh punishments administered by some teachers. The unrest reportedly destroyed property worth millions of shillings. Four students from Katakwi High School who were allegedly found interacting with students from Priscilla Girls Secondary School were arrested and are awaiting prosecution.

An unspecified number of students from Priscilla Girls Secondary School were also arrested in connection with the strike. Meanwhile, three teachers from Priscilla Girls Secondary School, whose identities have not been disclosed, were summoned to record statements as part of ongoing investigations into the incident-URN.
