The Bishop of the Diocese of Kasese, Francis Aquirinus Kibira Kambale, has called on communities within the diocese to take a firm and collective stand against gender-based violence (GBV), describing it as a moral, social, and spiritual crisis that threatens family stability.
Kasese District continues to grapple with alarming levels of GBV. According to district statistics, 34 per cent of women and girls have experienced GBV, placing Kasese third nationally in reported cases. Police records further show that at least 116 GBV-related incidents were registered in the first four months of 2025 alone, with authorities warning that many cases remain unreported due to fear, stigma, and cultural pressures.
Addressing believers as the new year approaches, Bishop Kambale urged individuals, families, and leaders to use their influence to prevent domestic violence, promote justice, and support survivors of abuse. He emphasised that faith-based values must translate into daily actions that protect human dignity within homes and communities.
The Bishop also encouraged couples to prioritise prayer, dialogue, and mutual support as a foundation for strong families, noting that unresolved conflicts, stress, and neglect often escalate into violence when left unaddressed.
Local leaders echoed the Bishop’s message, stressing that ending GBV requires deliberate action by every member of the family. They urged households to embrace prayer, responsible leadership, and godly principles as tools for restoring harmony and respect in homes.
Meanwhile, Mary Maryline Kabugho, an aspiring Woman Member of Parliament for Kasese District, attributed the persistent GBV cases to poor communication between couples, poverty, and lack of mutual respect. She noted that many domestic disputes escalate because partners fail to engage in open dialogue and shared problem-solving.
Kabugho expressed optimism that if communities unite, speak out against GBV, and support affected families, peace and stability can be restored within households across the district.
