Authorities in Kasese District have ordered all encroachers on Queen Elizabeth National Park land in Kasese Municipality to vacate immediately. The culprits in Railway Ward, Kasese Municipality, are said to have constructed residential houses and other structures within the national park’s gazetted area.
These individuals had previously been warned to vacate, but they ignored the warnings. The Assistant RDC in charge of Kasese Municipality, Justine Muhindo Mutabazi, who chaired a community meeting with residents, emphasized that those within the gazetted areas must vacate to allow the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to expand the electric fence.
Muhindo expressed disappointment, stating that despite warnings, local communities have remained defiant, even as they complain about wildlife attacks in their areas. John Kisembo Siriwayo, the Municipal Councilor representing the area, stated that the directive was long overdue.
He noted that the resistance by locals to vacate the land had hindered UWA from completing the fencing project, despite wildlife continuing to threaten residents and their property, particularly gardens. Janet Mbambu, one of the affected residents, requested more time to relocate to other areas-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
