Police in Kakumiro District are holding a 23-year-old man suspected of murdering his mother and burying her body in an unfinished pit latrine in Ikarabirenge Village, Kyakajumbi Parish, Kikwaya Sub-county.
The suspect, identified as John Tumwesigye, also known as Boy, was arrested in Igayaza Town while allegedly attempting to flee following the incident.
The deceased, Mary Gorret Nyinakabanza, 57, had reportedly been missing for three days before residents searching for her discovered her body buried in the unfinished pit latrine.
Kakumiro District Police Commander SP David Otabong confirmed the arrest, saying preliminary information indicates that the suspected killing followed a domestic dispute after Nyinakabanza accused her son of stealing coffee belonging to his father. Police exhumed the body for a medical examination as investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death got underway.
The deceased’s husband, 66-year-old Joseph Ndagyizimana, said the family had repeatedly disagreed with their son over allegations that he was stealing fresh coffee.
Ndagyizimana alleged that the dispute escalated after the family caught the suspect with eight kilogrammes of coffee. He also described his son as a drug user, a claim that has not been independently verified.
The discovery of Nyinakabanza’s body has shocked residents, several of whom condemned the suspected killing and called for accountability.
Ikarabirenge Village Local Council Chairperson Disan Mpaka confirmed the incident and expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Mpaka urged young people to work hard and become self-reliant rather than depend on their parents’ property. He cautioned that family disagreements should not escalate into violence. Police investigations are ongoing. Tumwesigye remains a suspect and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law-URN.
