Bwama Primary School and Lake Bunyonyi Secondary School in Kabale district are facing an accommodation crisis after staff houses were ravaged by a storm.
Located at Bwama Island in the middle of Lake Bunyonyi, in Kitumba Sub County, the schools provide primary and education services to locals surrounding the lake. However, the schools were hit by a strong storm on March 5, 2025, that left staff houses de-roofed.
Nicholas Kashumba, Lake Bunyonyi secondary school head teacher, says that the storm hit the schools at around 3:45 PM and blew off the roof of three staff houses at the secondary school. Kashumba says that one of the houses at the secondary school was completely de-roofed. He says the storm, which was characterized by a heavy downpour, also destroyed a house at the primary school.
Kashumba also says that the same storms destroyed three staff houses at the adjacent primary school. He says that it has left teachers stuck with no accommodation.
To improvise, Kashumba says that teachers have now resorted to sharing rooms, and he has also opted to share a room with the deputy head teacher.
David Muhereza Kato, Kitumba sub-county LCIII Chairman, says that he has already informed higher authorities about the matter and requested immediate intervention.
Moses Bwengye Tumwijukye, Kabale District Education Officer, says he is aware of the incident. Bwengye says that since the district is still in the budgeting process, the matter will be discussed to see if funding to renovate the houses is secured-URN.
