The Judiciary’s Law Reporting Unit at the Judicial Training Institute-JTI in Nakawa has revamped its online system to ease Legal Research for the public.
The Law Reporting Unit is in charge of the Uganda Legal Information Institute, commonly known as -ULII which is an online platform that provides free legal information service such as judgements, gazettes, legislation, Hansard and case law summaries from all courts and tribunals in the country.
It is a department under the Judicial Training Institute headed by Justice Andrew Khauka, which has been undergoing significant transformation, according to the person in charge of Law Reporting, Grade One Magistrate Joel Wegoye.
Addressing the media at Uganda Law Society Secretariat in Kampala during their weekly press conferences on Thursday, Wegoye, noted that in the past 18 months, ULII has undergone significant transformation, and most people are finding difficulties to navigate the system.
He said the new changes also help introduce ways of tracking cases to know for instance how many cases of gender-based violence have been overturned at the Court of Appeal and that there is availability of accurate data for anything legal being looked for.
Wegoye however noted that following such changes on their website, on May 30th 2025, they are going to conduct a training of all advocates and members of the public to introduce to them the new features.
He said that a team of Law Reporters from South Africa and Uganda will train them virtually in line with the Uganda Law Society’s Continuing Legal Education (CLE.
Wegoye said that on quarterly basis, ULII uploads more than 3,500 cases which they at times interlink with legislations, Gazettes and Hansard. He revealed that they have a fully-fledged data base with all legal information which is for the public free of charge and thus encouraged them to make good use of the online legal website.
The Uganda Law Society Vice President, Anthony Asiimwe encouraged lawyers and judicial officers to embrace ULII in order to always make their respective decisions and references from an informed and updated point of view.
Asiimwe, said some judicial officers cite old decisions of High Court not knowing that the recent ones from the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, the Assistant Administrator General Henry Kuloba appealed to the public to renew their letters of administration from the courts they got them from-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
