Joint security forces in the Karamoja sub-region have launched a campaign against the consumption of illicit gin, citing it as a threat to peaceful elections ahead of 2026. The Anti Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), Uganda Police Force, and UPDF are engaging communities to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal gin consumption and its impact on the democratic process.
Karamoja election zonal commander Francis Chemusto identified waragi abuse as a major factor fueling election violence, crime, and invalid votes. “Drunk individuals cannot effectively participate in elections, compromising the integrity of the democratic process,” he said, noting that alcohol impairs judgment and can have long-lasting consequences for the community.
Chemusto urged residents to collaborate with security agencies to combat the importation of illicit waragi, emphasizing that reducing consumption will promote a peaceful voting process. Mt. Moroto Regional Police Commander Ahmed Madiri said measures include community sensitization, crackdowns on illegal sales, and enhanced policing.
He noted that since 2021, authorities have seized 8,972 jerrycans of waragi and rescued over 228 girls trafficked within the country and to Kenya. Karamoja has long struggled with alcoholism, with a 2023 Uganda Alcohol Policy Alliance report showing a 47.8% consumption rate. Security officials continue to appeal for community cooperation to curb the illegal trade and ensure a safe and stable environment.
