Former UPC President Jimmy Akena on Saturday defied a court order, secured by Joseph Ochieno blocking him from organizing the special delegates conference.
Milton Obote’s son went ahead and staged the conference virtually whereby something like 20 of his so-called delegates would converge at a member’s home and use one smart phone to take part in the illegal meeting that was convened without enough notice and also in total defiance of the court order.
The controversial delegates conference, held in hiding and in total concealment to avoid police crack down and arrests of participants in enforcement of Ochieno’s court order, made several resolutions all favoring UPC life President Jimmy Akena while disadvantaging his opponents.
They purpoted to resolve that the UPC constitution gets amended to remove terms limits to bring it in harmony with the national constitution. It was also resolved to extend Akena’s term as President for another 12 months.
The members, selected outside the party’s known delegates register, also condemned the UPC electoral commission members who nullified Akena’s nomination for UPC Presidency in compliance with the recent high court order and declared Dennis Adim Enap the duly elected new Party President for UPC.
However, legal analysts say there is no way these resolutions can stand on grounds of illegality.
Its also being said that if he isn’t lucky, Akena could end up imprisoned for contempt of court because he went ahead to convene his so-called special delegates conference after the same having been stopped by court. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
