Dr Ben Mbonye the owner of Nakasero hospital has lately been unwell health-wise. Mbonye, who headed medical services in UPDF for decades and was also one time the permanent secretary for the defense ministry, is fairly old now in his 80s or late 70s.
Earlier this year, the proud Mukiga from Kihihi in Kanungu got an accident on the tennis court as he played tennis and fractured his back. He had to be flown abroad for specialised treatment.
He is now back in the country and continues to heal from home at Lubowa in Wakiso district while occassionally coming around Nakasero hospital to sign things and do abit of supervision.
Knowledgeable sources say that the frail health has diminished Mbonye’s ability to regularly come around his Nakasero hospital and it has also accelerated the need to divest himself from it’s management and day to day running. There had already been a process to bring in international partners and expand the hospital.
The international partners are supposed to bring in money for recapitalization to enable the hospital grow its profile and even diversify its services profile.
The transition to make Nakasero hospital become more international and compete more effectively with regional giants in Nairobi is ongoing.
And as all this happens, Mbonye and his dear wife who is a gaenachologist, have gradually been pulling out of management to create more quality time to enjoy their hassle-free retirement at their palatial home in Lubowa, off Entebbe road.
