Farmers in Kyababinga of Central Division in Kasese Municipality are counting losses following floods that swept away their crops.
The floods were triggered by heavy rains which swept over 30 acres of various crop in their gardens and destroying houses.
Besides Kyababinga, a heavy hail storm hit Karambi Sub County destroying crop in gardens, and houses worth millions of shillings, leaving over 50 farmers stranded.
The most affected areas is Buhuna parish.
Local leaders says the storm that lasted for four hours and destroyed coffee, acres of banana plantations, gardens of tomatoes, beans, and cassava among other food crops.
Musa Masereka one of the affected residents in Kirembe said his house was destroyed while his five acres of rice and maize gardens were brought down by flooding water from river Kirembe. Masereka is is now seeking government assistance to rebuild his life and his family of 14 children.
Kato Zunguka, a resdient notes that the poor drainage system as a major contributor to the flooding.
He criticized local leaders for failing to prioritise proper drainage which has over the yeat catalyzed flooding.
The Kasese District LC V Eliphaz Bukombi Muhindi has issued a warning to residents living along riverbanks and in mountainous areas to vacate as the district continues to receive heavy rains.
Muhindi assured residents that the district has a mitigation plan in place, including a flood victims’ camp in Karusandara Sub-county.
