Two suspects arrested in connection with the murder of a Gulu University student are expected to appear before the Gulu Grade Magistrate’s Court this afternoon for murder murder and aggravated robbery. The suspects, identified as Gerald Omara alias Torach, 18, a student, and Ambrose Rom alias Genge, 18, a mechanic, were arrested over the weekend following investigations into the killing of John Bosco Ngire.
Uganda Radio Network (URN) has obtained a copy of the charge sheet showing that the suspects face two counts of aggravated robbery and murder contrary to Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act. The charges were sanctioned by the Gulu Resident State Attorney on October 20, 2026, before being preferred by Joyce Atwoto, the police officer in charge of preferring charges.
According to the charge sheet filed at Gulu Central Police Station under CRB 521/2026, the suspects allegedly committed the offences on October 10, 2026, at Agwee Cell along Tegot Road in Laroo-Pece Division, Gulu City.
The prosecution alleges that the suspects, together with other people still at large, while armed with a hammer, robbed Ngire of his black Samsung mobile phone valued at 700,000 Shillings and a pair of black jungle boots, all valued at 800,000 Shillings. The charge sheet states that the alleged robbery occurred immediately before or shortly after the victim’s death.
The prosecution alleges that the suspects and others still at large, with malice aforethought, caused the death of Ngire at Agwee Cell on the same day. Police arrested the two suspects over the weekend following a call by the University authorities and the student leaders over what they alleged were continued attacks against students residing in hostels around the University Main Campus.
Over the weekend, the suspects, according to police reports, were taken to the alleged crime scene for a reconstruction exercise as part of the investigation into the alleged student murder of Ngire. Ngire’s killing sparked renewed concerns about the safety of students at Gulu University and the surrounding hostels, prompting university management to convene a security meeting with police, the army, students and local leaders.
James Ojok Onono, the University Communications Officer, told Uganda Radio Network in an interview that the institution expects justice for the deceased student. He also noted that the University is equally demanding accountability for one of its staff members, Christopher Nyeko, a Laboratory Technician who was murdered in May this year. “We kindly appeal to security that we are still demanding; we still have a pending accountability because our staff was also murdered in the same way in May 2026.” The suspects are expected to appear before Grade One Magistrate Miriam Amoro-URN.
