Uganda Christian University (UCU) has banned indecent dressing during its graduation ceremony at the Mbale University College scheduled for Friday. The ban was announced on Thursday during a press conference at Courts View Hotel in Industrial City Division, Mbale City, where university leaders addressed the media.
According to Reverend Professor George Kitayimbwa, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UCU, adherence to the dress code will be a key requirement for entry. He explained that only female graduates dressed in loose, long clothes that do not expose any part of the body will be allowed, specifically excluding minis or trousers.
Male graduates are required to wear suits or other formal attire, but not t-shirts or tight-fitting clothes. He explained that the dress code has been undermined in the current “dotcom era,” which he says has encouraged indecent behaviors. “The university cannot allow this because it is founded on the principles of the church, which does not permit nudity,” he said.
Bishop Samuel George Egesa, Chairperson of the College Governing Council at UCU, noted that the Mbale campus will graduate 580 students from various disciplines at its 26th graduation ceremony. He added that the guest of honor at the graduation will be Justice Catherine Bamugemereire.
Other expected guests include the Archbishop of Uganda, Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, and bishops from different dioceses. Masete Wokuri, a student who earned a first-class degree in Social Work and Administration, expressed her excitement. “The skills I have acquired will help me become an important person in the community,” she said.
