Four men armed with pangas have been charged with murder, aggravated robbery, and conspiracy to commit a felony in Kabale municipality. The accused are Owen Arinda, also known as Shakido, a first-year agriculture student at St. Ignatius University (IGUKA), Kennedy Akandwanaho, Mark Asasira, and Smith Arinda.
They were arrested following a spate of violent robberies that had terrorized residents, disrupted nightlife, and left the community fearful. Victims include Stephen Natamba, 40, killed while working as a night watchman at Albertine Hotel, and hotel owner Loyce Kanyoro, 59, who was seriously injured.
The attackers stole Kanyoro’s mobile phone, a 49-inch television, and other household items. On the same night, Kenneth Sunday Kabaka’s home in Karugashe was raided, with the suspects stealing a vehicle (registration UBP 471V), cash, and mobile phones.
On Wednesday evening, the four suspects appeared before Kabale Chief Magistrate’s Court facing multiple charges, including murder under sections 188 and 189, aggravated robbery under sections 285 and 286, and conspiracy to commit felony under section 390 of the Penal Code.
Other items allegedly stolen include Natamba’s mobile phone, worth UGX 350,000, property belonging to Univious Murungi valued at UGX 1.612 million, mobile phones and property from Tracy Mbabazi worth UGX 2.38 million, and Osbert Clever’s mobile phones valued at UGX 470,000.
Chief Magistrate Derrick Byamugisha did not allow the accused to plead, citing the seriousness of the offenses and the court’s lack of jurisdiction, noting that such cases must be heard in the High Court. The suspects were remanded to Ndorwa government prison and are expected back in court on November 18, 2025.
