Gad Mbayahi Bakwanamaha, the former chairperson of the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR) Inter-Ministerial Committee and a renowned educator, has died. Mbayahi reportedly passed away on Wednesday evening at Kampala International University Teaching Hospital (KIU) in Ishaka, where he had been rushed after being involved in a road accident.
According to reports, he was knocked down by a speeding vehicle while riding his motorcycle near the Kasese Cobalt Company along the Kasese–Kikorongo highway on Tuesday. Following the 2016 arrest of Omusinga (King) Charles Wesley Mumbere, the management of the Rwenzururu Kingdom was placed under an inter-ministerial committee led by Mbayahi.
He served in that capacity until 2020, when Mumbere appointed Joseph Kule Muranga as prime minister. A retired teacher, Mbayahi, recently attempted to contest for the Kasese District LCV chairperson seat under the National Unity Platform (NUP), but failed to meet the nomination deadline after the Electoral Commission reportedly challenged some of his documents.
Before joining NUP, Mbayahi was a key figure in the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and was later handpicked by Omusinga Mumbere to head the inter-ministerial committee managing the kingdom’s affairs. Bryans Basiisa, the NUP coordinator for the Rwenzori region, confirmed the development, describing Mbayahi’s death as “a great loss not only to his family and friends but also to the entire NUP fraternity and the people of Kasese.”
At the time of his death, Mbayahi was also serving as an executive member of the Rwenzori Savings and Credit Cooperative Society.
