A fire that gutted Mbale Garage in the wee hours of Friday morning has left several spare parts traders economically incapacitated, prompting calls for urgent support.
Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesman, says the fire destroyed six spare parts shops at Mbale Garage in Industrial City Division in Mbale City before it was put out by the Police Fire Brigade.
According to Taitika, by the time the fire brigade arrived, the six shops had already been burnt to ashes. He says no deaths or injuries were registered.
However, our reporters counted nine affected spare part shops. Taitika added that the cause of the fire is not yet known, but investigations are underway.
Hussein Wetaka, one of the spare parts traders at Mbale Garage, says property such as motorcycle and motor vehicle spare parts and refrigerators was destroyed.
He notes that most of the affected traders were servicing loans and have been left in shock about their next course of action. Wetaka adds that no one has reached out to them with a solution to the economic challenges they are facing.
Sinan Luzige, another affected trader, says all his property worth 15 million shillings was destroyed. He adds that despite several fire incidents destroying Mbale Garage over the years, no effort has been made by government to offer support.
