Eight suspected members of an aggravated robbery syndicate have been arrested during an intelligence-led operation that also led to the recovery of two motorcycles, Shs4 million in cash, and a panga believed to have been used in criminal activities.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the operation followed credible intelligence received on July 31, indicating that the suspects were planning a series of robberies within Kampala Metropolitan and neighbouring districts.
“The operation followed credible intelligence received on 31st July 2026 indicating that the suspects were planning to carry out a series of robberies. Acting on the information, police successfully arrested the eight suspects,” Owoyesigyire said. He added that officers recovered a brand-new panga concealed in the trousers of one of the suspects during a body search.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects used motorcycles to coordinate their operations, mainly targeting business people carrying large sums of money, particularly mobile money operators and agent banking businesses. Owoyesigyire said the suspects had confessed to participating in a robbery that occurred on July 27 near the Kisasi Road traffic junction in Ntinda.
“The suspects have since confessed to participating in a robbery that occurred on 27th July 2026 in Ntinda, near the Kisasi Road traffic junction, where they attacked and robbed a victim,” he said. Police recovered two motorcycles believed to have been used in the robberies, a brand-new panga and Shs4 million in cash, which the suspects reportedly admitted were proceeds from one of the robberies.
Owoyesigyire said detectives were working to establish whether the suspects were linked to other aggravated robbery cases reported in the Kampala Metropolitan area. “Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, identify additional victims, and determine whether the suspects are linked to other reported aggravated robbery cases.
“He commended members of the public for sharing information that aided the operation and urged business owners to take extra precautions. “We urge business owners, particularly mobile money and agent banking operators, to remain vigilant, avoid carrying large sums of cash without adequate security arrangements, and promptly report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.”-URN.
