Vincent Arnold Nsamba, 47, has appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrates’ Court in connection with the murder of Afrigo Band musician Moses Matovu on Thursday last week. Nsamba, also known as Sitenda, who was dressed in a checked red shirt, appeared before Senior Grade One Magistrate Aidah Nanjala on Monday afternoon.
The prosecution, led by State Attorney Jamaima Akingo, told the court that the matter had come up for communication of the charge. The court heard that on September 24, 2026, at Market B Zone, Kibuli Parish, Makindye Division in Kampala, Nsamba, with malice aforethought, caused the death of 77-year-old Matovu.
Nanjala asked Nsamba whether he had heard and understood the charge, to which he answered in the affirmative. “I have heard and understood.” The magistrate, however, cautioned the accused against making any further statements, explaining that the Magistrates’ Court lacks jurisdiction to hear capital offences.
The State further informed the court that investigations and related inquiries were still ongoing. Nanjala told Nsamba that he had the right to apply for bail before the High Court and that he would be provided with an advocate when the matter proceeds to hearing.
She subsequently remanded Nsamba to Luzira Upper Prison and ordered him to return to court on November 3, 2026, for an update on the progress of the investigations. Nsamba, who appeared composed in the dock, appeared to have an injured left arm, which was partly concealed under the sleeves of his shirt.
He was brought to court alongside Rose Tumusiime, the woman at the centre of investigations into Matovu’s killing. She was seen being driven away by security personnel without being charged. Born in Kawempe on June 19, 1949, Matovu began his musical journey at the age of four when he joined the Namirembe Cathedral choir.
He was buried on Friday, September 25, 2026, at the family’s ancestral grounds in Kyanja, a day after his death following injuries sustained during an early-morning confrontation in Kibuli. Matovu died at Kibuli Hospital after sustaining a severe head injury during the reported confrontation at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division.
According to police investigations, Matovu had visited a woman at about 5:30 a.m., and a physical confrontation reportedly followed as the two were leaving. A boda boda rider rushed the injured musician to Kibuli Hospital, where he later died. Police subsequently launched investigations into the suspected murder. Nsamba, who was initially identified as a private security guard, was subsequently arrested in Nansana, Wakiso District.
