New Kawempe North MP Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi on Wednesday made his maiden speech and this created excitement among MPs from both government and the opposition side.

He spoke about the need for electoral reforms to promote the independence of the EC whose powers he said was hijjacked by the military in Kawempe recently. He said he had a private discussion with the EC chairman Simon Byabakama who told him to fight for EC’s powers to be able to have the last word on security during elections.

Nalukoola also tried to talk about the problems his constituents face including those concerning poor access to health services. This prompted general duties minister at health ministry Anifa Kawooya to tell him about Kawempe regional referral hospital besides inviting him to her offices to discuss more on the possible interventions that can be made.

Nalukoola demanded that the speaker establishes a committee to investigate torture and political persecution Kawempe residents continue to face up to this day and said he was ready to bring the affected residents to testify first hand.

The deputy speaker Thomas Tayebwa who presided over, promised to look into all these issues and to also give Nalukoola more time to make his case.

Tayebwa also encouraged Nalukoola to feel at home, make friends and enjoy his stay in the 11th parliament. He told him that Parliament is like a family and MPs always be there for each other regardless of political differences.
