The Democratic Party (DP) candidate, Josephine Alice Etit, has withdrawn from the 2026 Oyam District Woman Member of Parliament race, citing lack of financial support from her party.

On Monday, Etit made a surprise visit to NRM Jane Frances Acilo’s campaign rally at Akucawitim Primary School in Okomo Parish, Ngai Sub County where she publicly offered her support for the later. With Etit out, the race is now between NRM’s Acilo and UPC’s Santa Alum Ogwang, the incumbent.

Speaking to URN, Etit claimed that her withdrawal is necessary because her DP party has not supported her financially.

She revealed that her colleagues in the DP camp are yet to receive campaign posters from the party even though voting date is around the corner.

She then announced her full backing for Jane Frances Acilo’s, promising to mobilize her supporters across the district to ensure Acilo’s victory.

Etit exit comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2026 general elections. Oyam is among the district experiencing heightened political competition, and her withdrawal is expected to consolidate support behind the NRM’s preferred candidate, Jane Acilo.

NRM Administrative secretary of Oyam district Bismark Olang, welcomed Etit’s decision describing it as a “tremendous decision” that strengthens the NRM’s position. Olang said NRM party emphasized inclusivity and remains open to all who wish to join.

However, Joseph Omona, the Returning officer for Oyam district explained that a party-sponsored candidate cannot independently withdraw from a race; only the party’s secretary general has the authority to submit a withdrawal letter to the commission.

Ronald Atim, a voter Iceme Sub County in Oyam congratulated Etit for making a bold decision to step aside considering her financial struggles and limited support. He implored Acilo to support Etit.

Etit becomes the second parliamentary candidate to withdraw from the race after Patricia Aceng Amne, an independent candidate withdrew from the Lira City Woman MP race.
