Uganda’s long-distance running icon Joshua Cheptegei is optimistic ahead of the Tata Steel World 25 Kilometre Race, scheduled for Sunday, 21st in Kolkata, India.Cheptegei says he is aiming for an improved performance as he continues preparations for the upcoming international season.
The world record holder in the 5,000m and 10,000m, and reigning Olympic and world champion, is currently training in Kapchorwa under the guidance of his long-time coach, Benjamin Njia.
The high-altitude training hub has been central to Cheptegei’s success, providing ideal conditions for endurance and strength building. According to the athlete, participating in road races is part of his strategy to achieve his marathon ambitions.”I am chasing my dream, which is to run a better time in a marathon, and that’s why I have chosen to run more challenging road races,” Cheptegei said.
Coach Benjamin Njia said the team has focused on sharpening Cheptegei’s road-running form, endurance, and race strategy ahead of the Kolkata event, which attracts elite athletes from around the world.“Joshua is responding well to training.
The focus has been on endurance and finishing strength. The Tata Steel 25km race is competitive, but we believe he is ready to perform better this time,” Njia noted.
The Tata Steel 25 Kilometre Race is one of Asia’s most prestigious road-running events and is recognized by World Athletics as a Global Label Race, making it a key competition for elite runners seeking strong performances and world ranking points.
Meanwhile, Victor Kiplangat, the reigning world marathon champion, praised Cheptegei’s discipline and commitment, noting that his teammate’s preparations in Kapchorwa reflect Uganda’s growing dominance in long-distance running.
“Training together pushes all of us to work harder. Cheptegei’s focus and experience motivate younger athletes, and we expect him to represent Uganda strongly in Kolkata,” Kiplangat said.
Uganda has in recent years established itself as a global powerhouse in distance running, with Kapchorwa producing world-class athletes who consistently shine on the international stage.
As Cheptegei heads to India, expectations are high that he will not only post a strong finish but also use the race as a steppingstone toward major championships early next year.
